About the studio
The calligraphy studio in Zurich is dedicated to preserving the art of the handwritten letter through traditional calligraphy and a contemporary artistic approach. Our work is based on historical techniques and authentic materials, with a special emphasis on parchment, natural pigments, and gilding.
By merging traditional calligraphy with contemporary graphic design, we create artistic, personalized, and design-focused works in which the handwritten letter plays a central role.
Dušan Mišić
Caligrapher & Graphic Designer
Dušan Mišić is a calligrapher and author with over fifteen years of experience in both traditional and contemporary calligraphy. His work represents a contemporary artistic and artisanal reconstruction of medieval manuscript art, executed exclusively by using authentic materials and techniques.
He lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland, and his pieces of art are held both in private and institutional collections worldwide.
OUR WORK
PROCES OF CREATING ART
What distinguishes us is an authentic approach to our craft, based on the materials and techniques used by medieval scribes. Relying on tradition and handcraftsmanship, we strive for every piece to be not just an artwork, but also a cultural-historical document, worthy of the time in which it is created.
WRITING TOOLS - TRADITIONAL PENS
We inscribe text by using various types of pens — goose quills, reed pens, and metal nibs — depending on the style and requirements of the text. Each type of pen yields a unique line quality and influences the character of the manuscript itself.
THE SURFACE - PARCHMENT
For our manuscript works, we exclusively use parchment – hand-tanned goatskin, the highest quality and most durable writing material available. It is precisely on parchment that countless books have been preserved to this day, as it is an exceptionally stable substrate that does not tear and gains value over time.
GILDING
The work often demands a special solemnity and heightened aesthetics, which is why we use exclusively 24-karat gold, applied via traditional gilding methods. This lends the works a precious appearance and symbolic depth.
PAINTS & INKS
We prepare all inks and paints according to medieval recipes specifically for work on parchment, ensuring authenticity and a superior visual impression. The preparation process is manual and takes several days, but the result is completely natural and long-lasting
